Ways to Naturally Ease Cold Symptoms

Two days ago, I had a sore throat all day while I was at work. I took 4 chewable Airborne tablets. Yesterday, I started to feel yucky and was getting congested.

I decided to overload my body with nutrients because I really hate being sick. I hoped to kick this cold right back where it came from. Today I woke up and I could actually breathe- my nose didn’t hurt or seem as irritated. My head feels better, too!

Here are some ideas that can help you ease your cold symptoms.

1. Make a Raw Immune-Boosting Juice.

This juice consists of 1 apple, 6-7 stalks of celery, 1/2 cucumber, 6 peeled carrots. For the immune-boost, I added a quarter-sized chunk of ginger, 1/2 lemon, and about 5 generous handfuls of power greens (spinach, chard, kale). It produced around 800 mL of juice. It was a lot! I downed the entire thing. It was pretty tasty.

2. Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods That Are Rich in Anti-Oxidants

When you’re sick, the last thing you want to do is leave the house to go shopping for health food. I looked around my pantry for whatever I could find that was healthy. Snoop around your own pantry-I’m sure you’ll be able to find something.

I ate some granola mix with chia seed & strawberries. Chia is one of nature’s highest plant-based sources of complete protein & Chia is a rich plant-source of Omega-3 oil. Did you know that chia is extremely high in anti-oxidants too? Anti-oxidants help prevent free-radical damage in the body.

I also had just bought some beautiful pomegranates. I picked one up, cut that baby open and started to eat while I watched my favorite show. Pomegranate seeds are full of B vitamins, potassium, and folic acid. Pomegranate juice is rich in anti-oxidants- it protects your body from harmful free radicals and it’s anti-inflammatory properties may even help prevent cancer!

3. Relax & Rid Your Body of Toxins

As I was dealing with the aches & pains, congestion, and yuckiness from my cold, nothing sounded better than a hot detoxifying Epsom salt bath before bed. Soaking in a bath of Epsom salt can pull toxins from the cells of your body through reverse osmosis. It can also soothe your nerves by balancing your electrolytes and ease muscle cramps and pain from inflammation. I also added 1 drop of my meditation essential oil and one of my bath bombs from Lush Cosmetics(that’s why the water is purple!).

4. Sleep With a Diffuser or Humidifier To Help Ease Your Congestion

I have a small cool-mist diffuser so I sat it on my nightstand as close to me as I could get it. I didn’t put any essential oils in it. I was mainly wanting to directly breath in the mist all night long. Running either a cool mist or warm vapor humidifier will ease symptoms of a head cold by moistening the air. Irritated nasal passages and a scratchy throat are main symptoms of head colds in the winter because the air is dry and the mucous membranes in your nose become irritated and inflamed. Adding essential oils can greatly improve symptoms as well- it’s all up to you.
